Bariatric Procedures
Revision surgery is the recommended option for patients who, after a bariatric procedure, do not achieve the expected results. The post-operative patient must follow the recommendations provided by specialists. However, if any of the following signs or symptoms are identified despite all precautions:
Any complications arise.
Weight loss slows down significantly.
There is a considerable weight gain.
The comorbidities associated with obesity are not addressed.
In these cases, it is necessary to investigate the root of the problem and determine if re-operation is required.
One of the most common cases of conversion surgery is the method change, meaning the application of a different bariatric procedure.
For example, the gastric band was a very popular procedure a few years ago, but it is now infrequently used. Some reasons for this include migration or failures in the control system.
Currently, it has been found that performing a re-operation to remove the band and then performing a gastric bypass achieves the expected effects, and those effects do not fade.
It is also possible to convert a gastric sleeve. That is, to transform this purely restrictive technique into a gastric bypass. By combining restriction with a reduced absorption process, optimal results are achieved.
Patients who have previously undergone bariatric surgery and have not achieved satisfactory results may be candidates for revision surgery. Some of the reasons include:
Losing less than 50% of excess weight within 2 years following bariatric surgery.
Intolerance to certain foods.
Issues arising from the previous surgery.
Weight regain.
Bariatric procedures performed before 2010.
There are various criteria to review, such as the quality and evolution of abdominal scar tissue and previous complications.
If your first surgery was a gastric band procedure, you may be a candidate for:
Conversion to gastric sleeve.
Extraction of the band.
Conversion to gastric bypass.
A gastric sleeve procedure can be revised with:
Duodenal switch.
Gastric bypass.
